Docksides Green Triple Bottom Line Fact Sheet

Dockside Green is committed to a Triple Bottom Line principle – an approach that is widely practiced in places such as Europe and Australia, but is relatively new to North American thinking.

  • Triple Bottom Line (TBL) is a business principle that measures corporate performance along three lines: profit, environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
  • TBL considers people, planet and profit—the principle being that environmental quality and social equity are just as important as black ink at the bottom of the ledger.
  • TBL can be viewed an approach to both reporting and decision making.
  • The TBL approach fundamentally changes how companies do their accounting. Companies using TBL place equal value on environmental and social outcomes alongside traditional reporting of financial results.
  • The phrase ‘Triple Bottom Line’ was coined by John Elkington, co-founder of the business consultancy SustainAbility, in his 1998 book Cannibals with Forks: the Triple Bottom Line of 21st Century Business. Elkingtonhas worked with companies such as BP, Dow, Du Pont, Ford, General Motors, Unilever and the World Bank. He is a member of the European Forum on the Environment & Sustainable Development.
  • TBL reporting is becoming increasingly popular among large companies worldwide. A KPMG survey shows 45 per cent of the top 250 global companies publish a separate corporate report containing details of environmental and/or social performance.
  • TBL reporting benefits include enhanced reputation, benchmarked performance, improved operations and management, improved risk management, increased confidence from investors, insurers and financial organizations and improved communication with stakeholders.  (more)
  • Early leaders in TBL reporting have experienced returns disproportionate to the resources they devote to the project.
  • Companies such as The Body Shop have long enjoyed a market advantage through TBL positioning and reporting.
  • The TBL approach involves being clear about the company's purpose and taking into consideration the needs of all the company's stakeholders - shareholders, customers, employees, business partners, governments, local communities and the public.
