Green Harbour:  Victoria, BC

As a chartered accountant, Joe Van Belleghem knows about cash flow.  As a partner in Windmill, the developer behind Victoria's Dockside Green, he knows how to put his money where his mouth is.The residential and retail project currently under construction in the heart of Victoria aims to become the first community in the world to achieve LEED® Platinum status.  To do this is plans to make use of - among other features, green roofs, on-site sewatge treatment and a heating plant fueled by waste wood.

What's cool about this project is that the environmentalists, the local community and the Chamber of Commerce have backed us," Van Belleghem says, "I call them our ‘free design consultants' because the feedback has been great."  Oh and that money-where-the-mouth-is thing?  Van Belleghem and his partners have committed to paying the city of Victoria fines of up to $1 million should Dockside Green fail to achieve LEED® Platinum status.
