Nature of Things turns spotlight on Dockside Green and green building movement
Victoria, BC, June 11, 2007- One of Canada’s – and the world’s -- most visionary environmental thinkers turns his attention to the green building movement in Victoria. David Suzuki will feature Dockside Green, the Victoria harbourside development which is setting new standards for green building technologies and design in North America, in the long-running CBC series The Nature of Things. The program will air on CBC –TV on June 17 at 7pm and again on CBC Newsworld on June 23 at 10pm.
“We were extremely pleased to have David come to our site and to show him the innovations that Dockside Green and its partners are working on,” says developer Joe Van Belleghem. “David Suzuki is one of the world’s visionaries on how to protect and enhance the natural world, and he understands that urban developments are innately linked to the health of ecosystems.”
Paula Salvador produced and directed the program, shot last fall, and says one challenge filming the Dockside Green construction site was getting high enough to give viewers a sense of the project’s scope. “Our cameraman kept telling me we had to get higher, so we talked our way into the penthouse suite of the top floor of the Delta Ocean Pointe to film looking north off their balcony. Those shots gave us an overview of Dockside Green, the harbour, and downtown Victoria. We filmed in high definition, so every detail is important.”
Salvador also wanted to give viewers a sense of Victoria’s upper harbour where Dockside Green is located, so they borrowed a rowboat and filmed Suzuki rowing around the Bay Street Bridge and delivering a spoken introduction. “It turned out to be a great shot. When we were done, David went by himself for one more row across the water, just to enjoy the great sunny weather we’d been lucky enough to have all day,” she says.
