Dockside Green

Greenhouse Gas Neutral

Our goal is to be greenhouse gas (GHG) neutral, having no net emissions from a building energy perspective. We are investigating using a renewable process classified as biomass energy cogeneration. The goal is to produce heat from the process to heat buildings and domestic hot water needs. The process uses wood waste recovered from local mills and woodworking shops, as well as tree trimmings and deadfall from the Capital Region. The waste wood undergoes a gasification process to produce a gas which is burned to reduce heat. This green energy will be used to heat the community, with a full backup system in place and surplus heat being sold to off-site customers. Ultimately, the goal will be to have the GHG savings of using biomass energy plus the sale of surplus energy, offset any GHG emissions created on site. We are also planning to incorporate other renewable energy sources within the community, such as solar water heating and photovoltaic power, with a strong emphasis on working with local and Canadian-based suppliers.
